This barnyard king is the middle of three brothers Steiff made in this design. You can find his rare, same-size, spotted mate and his big brother elsewhere in my shop, as well has their little woolie cousin.
Hahn’s (German for rooster) article number, 1317,07, printed on his flag, is faded, but you can still read it. That number indicates that he hatched sometime between 1959 and 1964.
The “17” in Hahn’s number denotes his “official” catalogued size in centimeters. Depending on how you measure him, his actual height is a little more or a little less than his designated size. If you include his felt comb in your measurement, Hahn is more like 18 cm, or 7 inches tall.
Hahn is in excellent condition, and I say that even though I do want to report a teeny tiny sign of his age. If I did not have a near mint brother of his in my vitrine, I would not have even realized this, and you would see nothing amiss if I did not mention it. Hahn’s comb, wattle, and tail are ever so slightly less vibrant than those of his brother. Even to use the word “faded” gives a too-strong interpretation to what I want to convey. The difference is really subtle, and, for all I know, it could be from a different dye lot; I just want to report what I see. The color of the felt covering Hahn’s legs and feet appears not to have changed the way his other felt parts have, and VERY SIGNIFICANTLY, his mohair is dark and vibrant!
I do want to mention Hahn’s chest tag. You can see that there is a crease across the bear’s head, but the tag is not at all bent; it feels crisp and (except for the crease) looks pristine.
I can’t think of anything else you’d want to know, but please write if you have a question. Whether your interest is Steiff animals, generally, or birds (or farm animals) in particular, you are sure to be happy with Hahn (and DECEMBERbe a relative or two? ;-)) in your collection.
WHATEVER YOU DECIDE TO DO ABOUT HAHN OR ANY OF MY OTHER STEIFF ITEMS, PLEASE BE SURE TO SEE THE ARTICLE I HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT STEIFF ID FRAUD—INCLUDING COUNTERFEIT CHEST TAGS—(AND OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR COLLECTORS). YOU WILL FIND THE LINK ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF MY SHOP HOME PAGE UNDER “FAVORITE LINKS.” IF YOU HAVE NOT LOOKED AT IT RECENTLY, I UPDATED AND EXPANDED IT IN DECEMBER, 2022.
