No sooner has a Steiff boxer been adopted from my shop, than another wants me to help him find a home. If you regret passing on my last 17-cm successor to Sarras, you have another chance. Because this guy has only his chest tag, his adoption fee will not be as high as his recently-relocated predecessor’s. 😉 I know; I know. I am supposed to be a “cat person,” but I can’t turn away a sweet doggie like this.
Boxer is the middle brother in a family of three siblings. At 16 cm, about 6 3/8 inches, to the top of his head, he is not far from his catalogue designation. Of course, you want to leave enough display space to include his ears, so you should plan on another 1/2 inch of vertical clearance.
Because Boxer has only his chest tag (reinforced on the back with extra cardboard), I can’t be absolutely precise about his age. His eyes are plastic (this color is hard to distinguish from glass, and still gives him a sweet expression), but there are slits in his ears from the prongs of the raised script button he once wore. Those two features date Boxer as no more recent than 1968, and probably no earlier than 1965. Even at his youngest, Boxer has passed the half-century mark, and he looks fantastic despite his age (notice, I say “DESPITE,” not “for” his age).
Boxer’s coloring is really nice—both his cognac-colored body (and gold underside) and his black airbrushing. The tops of his jowls and his velveteen chin are probably no less black now than when Boxer left Giengen; the black accents on the tips of the backs of his ears are a little subdued. Boxer’s ears are lined in ripe cantaloupe-colored felt. They still show a very subtle hint of the rose-colored airbrushing they had when new.
I just want to mention Boxer’s his chest tag again. I mentioned that I reinforced the back. There was a fairly serious crease going across the bear’s face. Of course, you can still see the crease from close up, but my reinforcement makes the tag crisp to the touch. I am not sure exactly what happened to the grommet that protects the hole in tag from damage due to rubbing against the link on Boxer’s collar; it appears to be missing a segment in the middle. Neither this missing area nor the slight rust on the grommet prevents it from doing its job.
I believe Boxer’s leather collar is original, although it could possibly have come from the next larger size of this dog. I say that because the collar seems to be longer than what would be needed to comfortably fit around Boxer’s neck. I have not seen many instances of this dog, so I really don’t know; DECEMBERbe some of them were made with more generous collars. In any case, the collar is in excellent condition, with barely a hint of wear along its edges.
I can’t think of anything else to tell you, but please write if you have a question. Boxer is a rare and special doggie, and if you missed his brother, here is another opportunity to own one of this size. Note, as well, that there are other family members, including a puppet, who are looking for new homes as well.
