Lumpi is a dachshund (“Dackel” in German). He bears some resemblance to Beppo, whose production he followed soon after Beppo’s ended. There is similarity in these two cute dachshund pups—in both coloration and pose. Both have happy open mouths and lolling tongues, and both have those cute ears trailing back behind them, as if they were blown in the wind as they ran. What is interesting is the fact that although Lumpi was made many more years than Beppo was—and you’d think that would make him easier to find—my own experience with helping these two cousins find new homes suggests just the opposite. I have helped more than twice the number of Beppos relocate, so based on my experience, Lumpi is rarer.
Lumpi is the smaller of the only two sizes Steiff made: 11 centimeters and 18 centimeters. The “11” in his article number, 1311,06, gives you that information. That number is quite faded on his flag (and this is exacerbated by the fact that it was stamped over the name “Steiff,” which probably made it more difficult to read, even when Lumpi was new). I believe you can still make out the number in my picture, and if not, you will definitely be able to do so in person.
Lumpi is not far from the catalogue; he measures 10.5 cm to the top of his head, about 4 1/8 inches. From his nose to the tip of his tail, Lumpi measures a bit more than 7 inches.
Lumpi was made with this number in two series: 1963-1964 and 1965-1967. I am fairly confident that he is from the earlier series, based on his early-style raised script button with skinny letters and his glass eyes.
I would say that Lumpi is in very good condition, and I mean that absolutely, not “for his age.” If you want to bring age into it, you can say that he is in very good condition DESPITE his age.
His once-black main coloring is now VERY dark brown. It is dark enough to necessitate my using a background color different from my usual black. I apologize for the slight variance among the supposed-to-be-white backgrounds in my various images. What is more important is the fact that Lumpi’s colors are rendered correctly and consistently among my images.
Lumpi’s mohair coverage is generally full, with a touch of thinning at the top of his head, which is most pronounced along the seam. Lumpi’s initial black coloring was airbrushed onto a light background, and because of the slight thinning, the difference between the still-quite-dark top color and the under color is more pronounced.
Lumpi’s other colors are two different versions of gold. The lower part of each side is a deep cognac color, as are the insides of his ears, the middle section of his muzzle, and about 40% of his tail. His underside is more of what I typically think of as “gold.” This color carries upward from his belly to the first 2/3 or so of his rear legs.
The felt lining of Lumpi’s happy open mouth is just a bit lighter than I believe was its original “ripe cantaloupe” color, and the rose-colored airbrushed accents on it are a bit diminished—but still quite visible. I believe Lumpi’s lolling felt tongue was always orange.
Lumpi’s red leatherette collar is original and in excellent condition. The rectangular metal ring (can a “ring” be rectangular? :-)) through which his collar is threaded also holds his chest tag. That means that there is a lot of activity happening at the ring, and in the competition between the chest tag and the collar, the collar always wins. You see that result as the folding over of the tag at the very top. By the way, since the ring that serves this multiple function is still attached to Lumpi’s chest, that means the tag is a true CHEST tag, and it does not wander around the collar as you often see.
If I am going to nitpick, I will add that the chest tag seems to be a bit dirty (most noticeable in the central beige area). I am mentioning this just to be complete; the tag is in otherwise good condition.
I can’t think of anything else to tell you, but please write if you still have a question. If you are a fan of Steiff dogs in general and dachshunds in particular, you will be delighted with Lumpi, as will the recipient, if you, if he is meant as a gift (and you can bear to part with him).
Be sure to check out Lumpi’s rare puppet cousin too!
