Meet adorable Pummy. This was a hard decision. I was really tempted to keep her for myself, but I am letting fans of Steiff rabbits have the opportunity to adopt her.
Pummy is the smaller of the two sizes this bunny came in. Although she no longer has her flag, her incised script “lentil” button allows me to know her article number by inference. Pummy’s number was 2960/15. The complete span of that series was from 1968 to 1976, but I can narrow her possible production dates even more. Her lentil button makes Pummy’s birth date no earlier than 1969, and her bears-head chest tag means she was not made after 1971. I believe Pummy could be from the earliest year of the range I have assigned to her, because her eyes are glass, a holdover, I believe, from the mid-1960s.
The “15” in her article number denotes Pummy’s size in centimeters to the top of her head. She is actually a lot smaller than that, measuring 11 cm, or a bit less than 4 3/8 inches. The top of her head is actually not a useful way to think about Pummy’s size, since you definitely want to allow some room for her ears in your vitrine. That way, she measures about 5 1/2 inches high, but that amount is somewhat variable, because you can pose her ears to be a little bit higher or lower. I think it would be a good idea to allow Pummy at least six inches of vertical clearance.
Pummy is in very good condition, and I am rating her absolutely, not “for her age.” The only reason I have downgraded her from “excellent” is that she has some scattered areas of thinning in her long mohair. Her coloring, with a mixture of beige, tan, brown, gray and even some touches of gold, is wonderful. Her white parts (covered in Dralon), could not have been whiter when she left Giengen more than half a century ago, even at her youngest. And the insides of her ears retain a touch of rose-colored airbrushing as well. Finally, she has all six of her original whiskers on each side of her nose.
Pummy did not have a ribbon when she arrived, and I am not sure she ever had one. Most of the pictures I have seen of other Pummys don’t show her with a ribbon. I decided to give her one anyway.
I can’t think of anything else to tell you, but please write if you have any questions. While you are considering Pummy, be sure to check out the other rabbits in my shop. They are all available to be part of your Easter display.
